Dev Anand Life and Films in Pics

Dev Anand the eternal Bollywood actor passed away in London at the age of 88. He was the ‘evergreen romantic superstar’ of the Indian Cinema. He was in fact one of the most charismatic Bollywood actors who was able to handle both comic and emotional roles with ease. One of the finest actors India has ever produced.

"Dreams should never die. When the dreams are dead, you are dead," the actor had famously said. He was not just a superstar but also a good director too. He directed around 19 films and produced as many as 31 films. He was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contribution to Indian cinema. He received three filmfare awards  and also the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award in the year 1991.

His first film was “Hum Ek Hain” in 1946 in which he has shared the screen with legendary Guru Dutt sahab. But his first big break came from “Ziddi” which was directed by Ashok Kumar. He is known for many of his best films like Baazi, Guide, Aandhiyaan. His pairing was much appreciated with Suraiya, Kalapana Kartik as well as with Waheeda Rehman and Nutan.

Guide can really be regarded as the milestone film in Dev Anand’s career. It was his first coloured film opposite Waheeda Rehman. His next highest grosser film was Johny Mera Naam in 1970. In this film Dev Anand was cast opposite Hema Malini.

It was however in the 60s that he became the Romantic hero with a host of films like Manzil, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Asli Naqli, Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai. In all these films he carried his own imitable style which indeed set him apart from the rest of his contemporaries.

In 2007 his autobiography “Romancing with Life” showed to the world his life story especially his love affair with Suraiya. Apart from Suraiya, he was inclined towards Zeenat Aman as per the autobiography. "Whenever and wherever she was talked about glowingly, I loved it. And whenever and wherever I was discussed in the same vein, she was jubilant. In the subconscious, we had become emotionally attached to each other”.

He is known to have given breaks to many big stars of today like Jackie Shroff and Tabu.

His presence will always remain with us. After all he was Dev Anand. He has acted in as many as 110 motion pictures.
