Asin was born in a Roman Catholic family to Joseph Thottumkal, a businessman and a doctor mother Seline Thottumkal. Asin grew up dreaming to become an actress.

She did her schooling from Naval Public School. A graduate in English Literature from St. Teresa's College at Kochi, Asin learnt her basics in acting from a private acting institute.
